The Interesting Stuff
Amy is originally from Sudbury, MA. She has a passion for progressive education, international travel, and language teaching and learning. After graduating from the Tufts-New England Conservatory dual-degree program with a Bachelors of Arts in Applied Linguistics and a Bachelors of Music in Classical Vocal Performance, respectively, she moved to Madrid, Spain to work as a bilingual preschool instructor. She returned to the United States to pursue a Masters of Arts in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages at Teachers College, Columbia University in New York City. During her studies, she taught at a bilingual, progressive, project-based school, cementing her commitment to highly student-centered pedagogies.
Amy wanted to go abroad again and sought a school in Latin America that adhered to her progressive teaching style rooted in student discovery. She found just what she was looking for at Escuela CEIBA in León, Nicaragua, where she worked as a teacher in a mixed-age class of 1st and 2nd grade students. After falling in love both professionally and personally, she and her soon-to-be husband left Nicaragua due to recent political unrest. After working as a bilingual kindergarten teacher in the rigorous New York City public schools, Amy wanted to return to her roots both literally and pedagogically. She was fortunate to be able to join Montessori Escuela in 2019, where her own two children attend.
She is fully certified in CPR and First Aid, and she has completed her American Montessori Society (AMS) certification course in Early Childhood at the Montessori Institute—New England. In her spare time, she enjoys cooking vegetarian food, running marathons, and singing opera in the shower. She is overjoyed to continue teaching at Escuela, where she finds it to be such a warm, vibrant, multilingual community.
